Managing a pool is hard. There are so many little things to take care of but you never have enough time if you're to focused on ensuring your guards are performing up to par.  Here are 5 simple tips to keep your guards happy and effective

1) Rotations

A healthy lifeguard is an awake lifeguard.  Encouraging rotations at facilities with multiple guards is a must.  Physically moving across the facility gets the blood flowing and prevents the growing fatigue one may experience when stilling in a lifeguard chair for hours on end.  In facilities with only one guard station the guard should be encouraged to move as well, although only when it is deemed to be safe.  Circling close to the patrons, when at minimum capacity, keeps the guard awake a swimmers safe.

2) Breaks

Everyone likes taking a break, but it's especially crucial for lifeguards.  Guards need breaks to stay focused and be most able to respond to issues quickly and effectively.

3) Hydrated

Give guards water!  Especially for outside facilities!   Hydration in important for all humans, so make sure your guards get some.

4) Break areas away from Patrons

We all know patrons are the most important part of the aquatics industry, however it is important to give your guards space away from them.  Your guards should not be visible to patrons when on break.

5) Paid practice

Pay them for manual trainings… I’m looking at you Andrew.
